28-30 September 2018 Once or twice a year, most ISMNZ staff workers with their valued volunteers, interns and invited guests come together for a retreat. Most will agree that going to an ISMNZ retreat is actually an excuse to catch up with people! Since the year 2000, the number of ISMNZ staff workers called to serve among international students in New Zealand has grown steadily. We are now based nationwide in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Palmerston North and Wellington in the North Island, as well as Nelson and Christchurch in the South Island. When we hear the words 'ISM retreat', it is not only about R&R (rest and relaxation) but an opportunity to have fellowship, meaningful conversations, to pray, sing, learn from the Bible, eat good food, laugh, even cry and brainstorm together. The sense of family becomes real whenever we meet together in one place. The theme for this year's worker retreat "Crossing boundaries - The Kingdom of God and ISMNZ" in Auckland, was led by Bible Teacher, David Bok. It was refreshing to listen to David as he talked about the Kingdom of God, based on the Bible and from his research that challenges mindsets. His honesty and inquisitive mind added richness to his story-telling, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, David's personal lessons on cross cultural missions opened our eyes to see from different perspectives. We greatly appreciate his down-to-earth candor and the deep respect he has for people. We want to thank everyone who made this worker retreat a reality, especially Wilberforce Foundation for their financial support. We also appreciate ISMNZ Society members who came to the AGM on the afternoon of Saturday, 29 September. If you are keen to join ISMNZ, check out Opportunities to Serve in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland and fill in an expression of interest. "After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying, 'Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!" (Revelation 7:9-10, NKJV)

Here’s an encouraging article on seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness, written about Jim Chew (elder and former Board member), and his brother, Ernest.
4-5 May 2018 Three ISMNZ representatives, Allen Tie (National Director), Dr Andrew Butcher (Board Chair) and Yvette Koo Butcher (Communication Manager) by invitation attended Wilberforce Foundation's Retreat in Auckland. The retreat included various speakers from Australia and New Zealand who spoke in a range of topics relevant to each organisation represented at the retreat. ISMNZ is grateful for the many wonderful opportunities to network and catch up with old friends. International Student Ministries of New Zealand appoints Allen Tie as its new National Director 1/6/2017 Allen Tie, Malaysian-born and a New Zealand permanent resident, is the new National Director of International Student Ministries of New Zealand (www.ismnz.org.nz), based in Auckland. Allen has worked in the corporate sector in East Asia for the last 19 years and is a graduate of the University of Canterbury. With the New Zealand government’s target to double international education to $5 billion by 2025, Allen’s timely appointment follows after a lengthy and rigorous global recruitment process. ISMNZ Chairman, Dr Andrew Butcher says, “The Board of ISMNZ is delighted that Allen has accepted this role and believes he is the right person to lead the ministry at this time.”
Allen has a strong personal teaching and training ministry and has worked extensively with returnee students. Allen’s expertise is in business operations, discipleship, mentoring, coaching and leadership. He successfully developed teams in start-ups and established new companies. While working as a senior manager at multinational companies, Allen secured contracts with major companies including Dow, ExxonMobil, Shell, Bayer, and BASF. Allen is working toward being a qualified coach. At 15, Allen became a Christian. While at university, the four years of help Allen received from the Christchurch Asian Navigators provided the deep grounding for his 30 years of serving God in the marketplace. He is married to Swee Lee Goh and they have two adult children. Allen is fluent in both written and spoken English and Chinese. Of his appointment, Allen says, “The harvest is not the problem. The call is to pray for the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers. I recognise that the work is plenty and the rebuilding of the walls needs foundational leaders - the kind that dares to dream big and think generational, but yet have the security to start small with individuals, and having the discernment to know where to focus and build deep.” Since it began in 2000, International Student Ministries of New Zealand continues to grow as they disciple international students throughout New Zealand. ISMNZ now regularly works with 150 returnees in 21 nations, impacting them to continually live as Jesus’ disciples and influence their communities for Christ in their home countries. Many graduates who transition into new stages within New Zealand are helping ISMNZ to impact international students for Christ and serve the Body of Christ in New Zealand. ISMNZ currently has 25 workers and volunteers across 15 campuses, ministering faithfully to approximately 700 students. The Board of ISMNZ is delighted to announce that Allen Tie has been appointed National Director.
Allen, a Malaysian, has lived in East Asia for the last 18 years. He has extensive managerial experience in multinational and global companies. Allen graduated from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, trained at the INSEAD Business School in Singapore, and is working toward being a qualified coach. His current ministry focuses on disciple-making, coaching and providing leadership in local and international Christian organisations in East Asia, with a strong personal teaching and training ministry. He has worked extensively with returnee students. Allen gave his life to Christ at 15. But it was the four years of help he received from the Christchurch Asian Navigators in the 1980s that helped him develop his personal walk with Christ and provided the deep grounding for his last 30 years of serving God in the market place. He is married to Goh Swee Lee and they have two adult children. Allen is fluent in both written and spoken English and Chinese. He holds a New Zealand permanent residence. Of his appointment, Allen says "The harvest is not the problem. The call is to pray for the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers. But I cannot pray for God's solution and not willing to be His solution! Being one of the many "return of the exiles" to Asia, I recognised that the work is plenty and the rebuilding of the walls needs foundational leaders - the kind that dares to dream big and think generational, but yet have the security to start small with individuals, and having the discernment to know where to focus and build deep." Allen's appointment follows a lengthy and rigorous recruitment process, with applications received from around the world. The ISMNZ Board believe Allen is the right person to lead the ministry at this time. We are particularly impressed by his deep faith and reliance on God; his experience in evangelism, helping believers grow in their faith, and mentoring; and his experience leading teams and organisations. We think his leadership style is well-suited to this role. We also think his experience working with other Christian organisations will be helpful for ISMNZ and we are pleased he understands the needs of returning students. Allen will commence his role in April 2017 for a five-year term.
